North Murray athlete Ladd McConkey had a pair of special visitors tonight as the Mountaineers faced Northwest Whitfield on the hardwood. University of Georgia head football coach Kirby Smart and assistant coach Todd Hartley checked out McConkey and the Mountaineers and after the game, Smart offered the North Murray senior a full scholarship to play for the Dawgs next season.

Ladd McConkey had a stellar senior season for North Murray, leading his team to the Elite Eight round of the GHSA Class AAA Playoffs. After moving from receiver to quarterback, the 6-foot, 180 pound athlete accounted for 2,695 total yards of offense and 30 total touchdowns. McConkey also returned kicks for the Mountaineers, scoring three total touchdowns in that department. As a defensive back, McConkey had four interceptions and returned three for touchdowns. During his high school career, McConkey played quarterback, wide receiver, defensive back, kick returner, and punt returner.
McConkey’s Mountaineers finished 10-3 overall and 7-1 in Region 6-AAA, winning the school’s first region championship in school history. The Elite Eight playoff appearance in the furthest North Murray has gone in the postseason. His senior season concluded with Region 6-AAA Offensive Player of the Year honors, Region 6-AAA All-Region first-team member, and a Chattanooga Times Free Press Best of Preps selection.
